For some strange reason everyone wanted to
go after trout that day, not jacks. I wonder if it had anything
to do with the guy we had to beat. It is safe to say that every
one of us wanted to show Vic that he couldn't win the pool two
years in a row, so we started fishing trout first off. Now, our
habit had been to fish jack in the morning and trout in the afternoon,
but that was by the boards now. We pulled out all the stops to
beat Vic. Gene did give it good effort, landing the second biggest
of the trip (32 ½ & 10 lb. 2 oz.), but it wasn't meant
be. |
We did spend part of the afternoon back at Aaron's jack hole
looking to beat that record. This is where I began this little
story, with my reel jamming. I later learned this was a common
problem when you were trolling and then started casting, due
to the line twisting so much. I will try Cameron's suggestion
of Spider Wire next outing. There is nothing worse than going
all that way to fish and then have trouble with your gear.
We did catch some fine jacks, with Gene's
largest being 40 ½" long while mine was 36".
It was amazing how many of the big ones this year had all been
bigger than the pool winner last year (40 ¼"). I
can hardly wait until next year's trip!
Back at camp it was time for a time for a
great steak dinner with Mario presiding, then the presentation
of the pool winnings.
All I can say is that if Vic wins the trout
category again next year I fear his story telling will be more
than any of us can stand! Aaron took the jack money, and he was
the model of modesty (take notes Vic). He even took his jack
home to show his kids.
