Tuesday morning, Gene, Joe and I headed
for our favorite jack flats, hoping to find the pool winner.
On the way, less than 15 minutes from camp, we came across the
Kindersley Boys who had run out of gas the night before trying
to locate the camp. They had found a nice beach and built a huge
fire to keep warm. One of their crew, Joe, had fallen in the
lake (sober as a judge I hear) and put his pants by the fire
to dry. He then promptly passe
uh, had a sleep, and when
he got up, all that was left of his jeans was the zipper and
a belt buckle! Good thing he wasn't in those pants at the time.
Hence forth, that beach became known as Kindersley Cove in their
memory. The day was not a total loss for the boys.
Later that day Atol caught a 46 ½" jack that became
the standard for us to beat. Eddy gave it a good try, he had
one that may have beat it pretty much landed, but the net was
too small. During the netting attempts, the fish slipped the
hook, but was so played out it just lay in the water next to
the boat. Eddy and Matt tried to scoop it out of the water, but
that was more difficult than catching a greased pig. It finally
summoned enough energy to swim away. At least that's their story,
and they're sticking to it. In Gene's boat we tied into some lakers with each of us catching one. We would find a sandbar with a sharp drop off and troll along the shelf. They seem to like this structure for feeding, at least on this trip. Although not Pool winners, they were decent sized. Joe's was 29" and 7 ¾ lbs, Gene's was 30 ½" and 7 ½ lbs, and mine was the baby at 4 ¾ lbs. That night around the fire we thought we were being attacked by bats, but it turned out to be three nighthawks swooping down around the camp fire. I had never seen one of these birds before, and when I learned that they ate mosquitoes I considered them to be my new best friends. Another bird I had never seen before was a black Canada Jay. It was extremely friendly and would come right into camp and hop to within a few feet of us before flying away again. The Kindersley Boys joined us around the campfire, finally. They endured the jokes at their expense, taking it all in stride. Why, Tyler enjoyed it so much he slept curled up by the fire that night. I guess his tent mates snoring was too much for him. |
